Dream Theater Live At Hovet In

A year ago I saw Dream Theater on the Metropolis Part II tour and to be quit frank I wasn't that impressed by hearing the whole record from start to end and some extras. Not that the record is bad in any way but I wanted to hear more of the old stuff. I was hoping this set would not contain too much of their most recent record, 6 Degrees Of Inner Turbulence.

Dream theatre entered the stage at a quarter to 9pm, starting the set with "The Glass Prison" from Turbulence. Halfway through the song some idiot threw up a mug of beer at James LaBrie. The mug doesn't hit him but some of the beer did. LaBrie continued to sing. LaBrie focuses his eyes on the moron and gives him the famous finger. Very professional! Next up was "6:00" from Awake followed by a mix of tracks from all of their records in a breathtaking pace. Only two more songs are played from the latest record: "Misunderstood" and "The great Debate."

If it wasn't for the few minor mishaps, different sounds on parts of the songs and dialogue with the audience, I would have thought it was a pre-recorded show. Dream Theater sounded that tight.

As for the band: LaBrie sings better than he ever done before. His voice only cracked at the very end of the gig, which is quit impressive considering the way he sings. John Petrucci is as tight and fast fretting as he's on the records and is not doing anything wrong. My only wish is that Petrucci done some more improvisation in the songs. Why hasn't the shy James Myung gotten more of attention? Seeing his hands flying over the strings of the bass is insane. Myung does more to Dream Theater's sound than most people recognize him for. Pay attention to Myung's playing the next time you see Dream Theater. It's worth it. The only thing I can complain about is that Jordan Rudess’ volume level was pushed to low half way through the gig. Rudess needs to be heard. And Mike Portnoy... WOW! Not only is he like a madman behind his huge drum kit, but he does backup vocals and conducts both the band and the audience. What is this guy drinking, rocket fuel?

After two hours and 40 minutes the show is over. I left the arena with aching feet, a sore back and a very silly grin on my face. If you’ve never seen Dream Theater live this is the tour to see! It's worth ever hard earned money it takes to get in there. You get the full range of Dream Theaters' music from the past to the present.
