Well, let me say... I don't know if I've ever been as disappointed with a show as I was with this one.
I got to the show maybe an hour before Deicide came on, and since I didn't really come to see any other band, I went to the bar with a few friends till Deicide was ready to come on.
When the lights went down the whole place started a "Deicide" chant. You'd think a large crowd chanting the name of your band would get you fired up or at least interested in playing the show.... not Deicide. While I shouldn't say the whole band wasn't into it, at least half wasn't, including singer/bassist Glen Benton.
For $22.00 I expect more than a half an hour set from the headliner.
Deicide opened with "Children of the Underworld." Great song… good start. From there it was “Bastard of Christ,” “Lunatic of Gods Creation,” “Serpents of the Light,” “Bible Basher,” “Once Upon the Cross,” (order here maybe be wrong but close) “Dead But Dreaming,” “When Satan Rules His World,” “Sacrificial Suicide” and “Dead by Dawn.” The average Deicide fan may say, "Hey, that's a great set so far," and yeah it is. It was a great show when I saw it two years ago as well. More loyal Deicide fans would read that set list and say, "Hey something's missing... like anything off their new album." And to this point, that was true. After 10 songs... not one single new song was played. Well, gee thank you Deicide...
For their last song of the night we got the title track off Scars of the Crucifix. It may seem weird to some fans, but after two absolutely horrific albums, Deicide put out a good album with Scars of the Crucifix and I expected to hear more than one song off of it.
Like I said before, I expect more than a half an hour from a headliner, especially Deicide whose songs are roughly 2:30 to 3:30 minutes long. Well, not tonight: this was Deicide in fast forward. They blew through every song twice as fast as it should have been played. It was an absolute disgrace, but then again anyone that knows about Deicide knows Glen Benton doesn't give a damn about the fans or what they want. As much as I love Deicide’s music, I will never waste my money on them again!! I will say Eric Hoffman was the one member that seemed genuinely into the show… headbanging and getting as close to the fans as he could with a huge smile on his face showing he enjoyed being there.
Oh well, can't wait for Suffocation, a true class act, to be back beginning of next year.
