REVIEW BY: Kiss My Army

On Sunday June 20th, I saw KISS’s Rock The Nation 2004 World Tour at the Chronicle Pavilion in Concord, California. The show was an all out fun show. KISS is a band that still knows how to rock still after more than 30 years! There was a diverse amount of people there. Of course there was a lot of people who were older, like the people who were into KISS back in the ‘70s, but there were a lot of little kids there, the most I’ve ever seem at a concert. I guess their parents all brought them. There were 8 year olds in KISS make-up running around screaming at everyone -- it was actually pretty cool for those guys to enjoy themselves at a concert at their age.

Z02 opened the concert. I thought that they were really good; they put on a good set. They really didn’t get the crowed in roar or anything, only when they mentioned KISS. After about half an hour they finished up and left the stage. More people were coming to the concert throughout the time.

Poison was up next. Their set changed took a lot shorter amount of time than I expected. Once they started, they got the crowd to really get into it. Poison played for about 50 minutes, and actually put on a pretty good performance. They were a band that just had a lot of fun when they played. I actually think its better when bands play after their “spotlight” and don’t deal with all the stupid MTV shit and the people who only like them because they think they are all hot or something. After they left, everyone was pumped to see KISS!

KISS came on strong, blasting into their set with “Love Gun.” All in their make-up, they sounded strong and pure. I thought that their backdrop was really cool. Fireworks went off on stage as the crowd roared for KISS. The continued they’re set with songs such as “Deuce,” “Rock and Rollover,” “Got To Choose.” They also did a song they never played live before until now -- “All The Way.” Paul was commenting about how they audience wasn’t very big, so we had to be loud. Through their set there were a lot of KISS elements done. They had the crowd sing along with them to many known favorites such as “Lick It Up,” “I Want You” and “I Love It Loud.” Gene Simmons breathed fire, spat blood, and flew up to the ceiling of the stage to song “Unholy.” Also Paul Stanley flew on his ropes to a tiny stage in the middle of the seat for the people in the back for “I Was Made For Lovin’ You.” “I know that sometimes you got to sleep in late when you were having a lot of fun the night before,” Paul said to in reference to the fact that they people who get up early are the people who get the close seats. They then closed their set with “Detroit Rock City.” When they left, there was no doubt there would be an encore.

After about 5 minutes of chanting they came back on stage. Paul started to talk about how America is in a bad state and we need to fight back by living out our lives and not worry about the bad people in the world. That speech eventually lead into “God Gave Rock And Roll To You.” Paul noticed how many little kids were there and said, “You guys are the future KISS Army. We were here for your mothers and fathers, we were here for you brothers and sisters, and we will be here for you!” claiming their existence in rock and roll for many more years to come!

After the song was completely over Paul said, “There ain’t nothing left to do…but rock and roll all night and party everyday!” Then they went in to the song that everyone in the world knows. It was great to sing along to that song because everyone in the venue knew at least that song. Then they all started to leave. Paul Stanley held his guitar high in the air, and the audience chanted, “Break it!” And Break it he did, a signature rock and roll move! I left the place very happy; KISS still has more strength than most rock and roll band out there!

The show was a classic KISS show. Just about everything that KISS is know to do was done at the show. And because KISS is a band that doesn’t do drugs (well at least Gene) their aging does not seem to affect their performance at all, they remain very strong, managing to impress me even after everything that is known about KISS, they live up to their expectations.

I was lucky enough to get a CD recorded of the show, and ever time I listen to it, it will bring me back to that awesome day I first saw the legendary KISS!
