LA Guns Live at The Press Box

REVIEW BY: Steve of Orange

If any band plays the Press Box, I guarantee they had no idea what a toilet this place is. I arrived at the Box around 10:30 pm, got a seat on the patio and started drinking, because little did I know, L.A.GUNS was not going to start playing until 12:15. Well, that’s the time they were scheduled.

As the night went on, and on, I went to the bar to get another beer and as I turned around, Phil Lewis was standing there. From the look on his face, I could tell he was thinking what a shit hole this place was. The press box used to be a spot where you could go and get lunch, drink a few beers, and watch a ballgame. Now, it’s the armpit of Anaheim!

After five or six bands, it finally came time for L.A.GUNS to take on the two by four foot wide stage – it was quite a joke. Steve Riley on drums couldn’t fully extend his arms and Phil Lewis had about half an inch of space to move around.

I filed into the section of the venue or “toilet,” which ever one you prefer, at 12:15 am, only to stand there for thirty minutes due to sound checking. Finally, at 12:40, L.A.GUNS took the stage. They opened with “Over The Edge” immediately followed by “Sex Action.” It was one hit after another. They had to do all their hits because the bars in California close at 2:00 am, so they had about an hour and fifteen minutes to play. As the show went on, there were all kinds of problems. The sound sucked and then the microphone went out on Phil during the song “Kiss My Love Goodbye.” He had no idea the mic was not working. Also, the element of people the “toilet” attracts is lovely. A couple of skinhead-type assholes were trying to start trouble with whom ever they could - taking a swing at one guy for no reason. Just another wonderful night at the “toilet.”

The one highlight of the night was Brent Muscat on lead guitar who played every song to perfection while Phil Lewis played rhythm guitar for most of the songs. I am an L.A.GUNS fan and I don’t blame them for this show being so bad. I blame the booking agent and the promoter who thinks he has to book 5 bands in front of the headliner. If they only booked 2 or 3 bands, then maybe L.A.GUNS would have more time to set up and get the sound right, and in turn, the band could play a whole set.

After the show, the guys in the band hung around for a while, signing autographs and talking to us and the rest of the fans. The coolest dudes were Steve Riley and Brent Muscat, two class acts, who shook hands and were appreciative of the fans coming out to see them. I would recommend seeing L.A.GUNS but in a different venue.

HERE IS THE SHORTENED SET LIST:

1.Over The Edge 2.Sex Action 3.Never Enough 4.Crystal Eyes 5.New song off the Waking the Dead CD 6.Kiss My Love Goodbye 7.Electric Gypsy 8.Ballad of Jayne 9.Rip and Tear.
