Iggy & The Stooges NOT Live at

REVIEW BY: Mark K.

It just goes to show what a big bag of pussies we have become over the past thirty years that the Iggy And The Stooges reunion show at, of all places, DTE Music Theatre, would be cancelled due to a shortage of electricity. With that said, I can only hope that the rescheduled August 25th date turns out to be THE greatest show ever. But I have my doubts.

As we sauntered up the freeway there were some signs of hope. A car of freaks being one of them. Yes! Somebody was still heading to the show. And after a while it seemed that, yes, the show would go on and that the circumstances really couldn't be better. No electricity from New York to Lansing, but in spite of that, Iggy was Raw Power. Surely they'd have generators, and even if they couldn't generate enough electricity for a full-wattage performance, maybe we'd get even luckier and see an impromptu unplugged performance. It is, after all, rock and roll.

As we drove past the entrance to DTE and saw the marquee reading, "Show cancelled, new date is Aug. 25," we knew that the concert was not going to happen. Fortunately there was an open liquor store up the road a bit at an intersection. There was a small gathering of about 30 people, old school Detroit punks who were mostly out of gas and couldn't get back to where they came from. So we bought a six-pack of beer, some Kruncher's potato chips... smokes, water and a couple candy bars and enjoyed the lovely Michigan summer sunset in the convenience store parking lot.

There was a short, stubbly woman running around and picking up discarded bottles and cans and reminding all the kids that they had to leave sooner or later. I got into a conversation with her and she told tales of great misfortune that had occurred there over the summer. She told about the recent sold out Beach Boys concert which turned into a ruckus because too many free passes were given out. She told about the incidents that happened when Ozzfest came to town. And here we were. Trying to get to the Iggy show, despite the circumstances, thinking that it IS rock and roll and that the show must go on. But it didn't. But ya know what? I think that if it did, it would've been great.

Iggy walked out on stage, barely noticeable as everyone was distracted by the lack of any real working electricity, which caused a bit of a conundrum with the vending services. The crowd was mostly quiet and in a very forgiving mood. Ig spoke into the microphone, "It's rock and roll kids! Welcome to the funhouse!" Immediately the crowd stood in appreciative ovation, clapping, whistling, losing their collective minds. The Stooges ripped into a sloppy version of "No Fun" and everyone began to dance and throw things. In order to conserve energy, by the third song the band slid into an acoustic jam of several classic tunes... "Wanna Be Your Dog"... "Dirt"... Search and Destroy", etc...

It was inspiring and made a difference for the 10,000 people who actually believed that the show would go on.

Ok. So I'm dreaming. Sorry. It could've happened though.
