First of all, it's just not right that Dream Theater doesn't close the show when they come out to the West Coast. Their material is so vast and appreciable that most DT fans leave a bit frustrated that they didn't play a longer set.
Anyways, Fates Warning sounded very good and the stuff off the new album sounds pretty heavy. They are definitely making some fans on this tour. As an added bonus, James Labrie (vocalist, Dream Theater) came out to lend his pipes on a tune and then Mike Portnoy (drummer, Dream Theater) came out on the next song to play “Shut Them Down” (I think this is the name of the song) which is actually an OSI tune. This was a really cool treat because alot of DT fans probably haven't bought the album because they had no idea what kind of sound it has.
Dream Theater played a great show as usual, but there were some problems with the sound on some songs like “Misunderstood” off the new disc. They didn't play “My Glass Prison,” which was a disappointment but they shocked the hell out of the fans by playing “Diary Of A Madman” by Ozzy Osbourne! No disrespect to the godfather of metal, but DT performed an excellent rendition of this metal classic and it sounded better than the original.
John Petrucci is amazing to watch and I for one cannot wait to get his solo disc when it comes out. All of the band members are extremely talented and even a non-DT fan will be blown away by their musicianship. They better come out to the L.A. area again on their own.
Queensryche really impressed me, especially the lead singer and his strong vocals. The only time he seemed to struggle was on “Empire” but the rest of songs were great. I normally don't listen to the Empire album because it’s the most pop-oriented material they have and it gets old after a while, but the songs really sounded great when they were played live. There was a really good response from the crowd as well.
