One would expect a lineup of this magnitude to tear the house down. It did not disappoint. A brief synopsis of each:

Mudvayne: They took the stage at 3:00 for the beginning of what was to be an 8-hour marathon. I only heard their last 2 songs but you definitely felt them. The stage was so large I can’t understand why these guys were given the amount of room comparable to a crawl space to perform.

Deftones: Once again, 1/10th of the stage to work but they seemed to be flailing around everywhere while delivering a relatively tight set. While their music is impressive, I finally realize why they haven’t been marketed or achieved the success of their peers. The lead singer honestly looks like a beat up version of the killer in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I mean a mom-dropping-her-own-screaming-at-the-beast-to-please-go-away kind of ugly. If you remember the lead singer of Grim Reaper, he wins hands down unanimously in a beauty contest between the two.

Linkin Park: The rain starts… however the crowd doesn’t seem to mind. Everyone was there to have a great time. I never witnessed any altercations amongst the crowd. That simply doesn’t happen down here. They were given an hour to perform, and given they have two 30-minute CDs, did primarily everything they had. Saving the majority of Hybrid Theory for the latter half of the show they won the crowd over. There were a few ramps with a couple of monitors in the back. Nothing extraordinary. It was a very solid performance indeed. There was this fat dough boy right in front of me who was freaking out the entire time like he won the lottery. I’d like to read his review.

Limp Bizkit: Fred Durst has come out every show so far on this tour badmouthing Britney Spears. He needs any notoriety, given the lack of any quality new material, and he realizes his gravy train is leaving him at the station. It was a 75-minute set which included a downright awful cover of “Sanitarium.” He screamed well on the hits and with his energy, the crowd remained responsive.

Metallica: Between sets I vacated my sweet seats to sneak down to the field to be one with the die hard freaks. I made my way about 20 rows from the front and right in front of me two girls begin making out and then some. What a prelude. Metallica hits the stage and unloads right into “Battery.” The stage was so immense you felt engulfed by its presence. There were 4 windows on the back of the stage that were giant video screens showing the different members of the band performing. Tremendous effect. The lighting system cast an alluring glow, which enhanced the experience. James’ voice as well as the sound in general was beyond impeccable. His growls and laughter on “Sanitarium” pierced right through to the bone. Thankfully only two songs were played off St. Anger, which I must confess sounded good live. Not playing “Whiplash” and “Fade to Black,” which were conspicuously absent, was the only disappointment. The insanity that prevailed during the encores was tremendous. The energy during “Creeping Death” was overwhelming and you were left helpless, succumbing to its power and flowing with the crowd. It reminded me of the picture or commercial where the guy is sitting in a chair watching television in sunglasses and his hair is being blown straight back and objects are flying everywhere. I neglected to mention the magnitude of the towers and towers and more towers of speakers which made the bass of the gunshots for the intro to “One” unlike anything I’ve ever heard. The song was accompanied with many pyrotechnic blasts. Metallica proved they are indeed the preeminent presence in heavy metal and their peers should take notice because Hetfield, Ulrich, and company set the standard once again tonight.

The set list:

Battery
Master of Puppets
Harvester of Sorrow
Sanitarium
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Frantic
Sad But True
St. Anger
Fuel
Seek And Destroy
Blackened

First Encore:
No Remorse
Nothing Else Matters
Creeping Death

Second Encore:
One
Enter Sandman
