We've come for you all Dallas! Anthrax (the band!) visited the Big D. on May 22nd in support of their latest album. After another crappy day at the office, I was ready for some old school metal. This is the fifth time I've seen them live.
The show was moved with the recent demise of the Canyon Club (very sad -- great place for concerts). Motorhead was also supposed to co-headline, but they were a no-show. The band said they seriously considered canceling it all together and playing Austin instead. The Underworld is basically a big pool hall with a stage at one end. Attendance wasn't too bad, considering this place is a total dive and it was a Thursday night. Mixed crowd of old and young, human and mutant. Since the Great White tragedy, I'm leery of small clubs any more. I didn't see any sprinklers, so I watched the show from the left side of the stage near the exit.
The band came out in matching black jerseys. Scott Ian had a dead rodent for a goatee on his chin, but that didn't keep him from stomping around the stage like a madman. John Bush asked that people in front stop throwing beer, since it wouldn't help his hair grow. He was also perturbed that the satellite dish on the tour bus was broken, so they couldn't watch the basketball playoffs (hang in there Mavs!) New guitarist Rob Caggiano looked like an extra from The Road Warrior with his black mohawk. Charlie Benante's drum skills haven't slowed down over the years. Frank Bello helped with vocals on several tracks. Anthrax was in old form, ripping thru a mix of old and new tunes.

My only complaints were the length of the show and apathetic crowd. Since Motorhead cancelled, Anthrax should have had an extended set. They went on stage early and only played for a little over an hour.
Sometimes they seemed ambivalent about being there, just going through the motions. It might have had something to do with attendance, too. Pretty sedate for shows I've seen in the past. Only a few crowd surfers, not much of a mosh pit. Could have been the day and venue. Oh well, it's way better than staying home and watching that American Idol crap any day.
And before I forget, how about the lame local radio station?! They show up with banners, making a big deal about supporting this type of music. I could listen all day and not hear one song from the concerts you're at. You're not fooling anyone.
If you don't catch them on tour this time around (they're supposed to go thru the States again later this year), get out there and pick up the new album. It's one of their best. Go Burn! Hi Schmoop!
