“The Maniacs of Rock” --- 'nuff said!!!
That’s right, it’s been 3 months since, Roughhouse, made their Philly homecoming, but tonight is a little bit different, as they are opening for original Guns n Roses drummer Steven Adler’s new group Suki Jones. I have seen Roughhouse easily 25 – 30 different times dating back to 1985, but only twice as an opener, once for Keel & once for Ace Frehley. These guys have packed places up & down the east coast as headliners for years, so I had this feeling the guys tonight would come out on fire, with a short set to leave everyone blown away.
Well they did just that, from the opening drum fill on “Hellraiser” and right into “Love or Lust”, the band was turning it up an extra notch tonight.
Bassist Dave Weakley doing his classic robot moves during “Looking for Action” and lead singer Luis Rivera’s intensity in his voice during ‘Can’t Find Love”. The band had the crowd on their feet, hands in the air, dancing & singing along with all the old songs. You would’ve thought it was 1988, and it was an “all ages show” at the legendary Empire Rock Room in Philly.
Next up “When the Moon is Full” off their independent release, with a slight change, just to make it a tad bit heavier sounded great. Before the next song, Luis told the crowd that the band is working on 3 CDs with some live stuff, new stuff, and some never released stuff, and hoped to have the first one out before summer time. This made the crowd even more excited, since hell we have been waiting 15 years for a new CD.
“Racin” was next and the band, is literally racing around on stage, moving non stop, with such enthusiasm & intensity, doing splits, kicks, jumps, all to make Diamond David Lee Roth proud.
A staple in a Roughhouse show for years, has been the time to turn the microphone over to Dave Weakley to sing what has become a Philly blues classic, “Ugly Bitch” Which original guitarist Gregg Malack at this point makes his way onto the floor, and picks out a female fan on the dance floor, for a little bump n grind session, while he plays his solo. Which you couldn’t tell who enjoyed this more, Greg, the fans, or the lucky female.
One song which for years, I have always thought could have been the song to maybe put this band over the top, is the “Don’t Go Away” which is just a true pop metal song to the fullest.
Show is coming to a close, and the band just doesn’t slow down, with the AC/DC song “Dirty Deeds” has the crowd really fist pumping & singing along which leads to the last song, the epitome of what Roughhouse, Teeze, whichever you want to call them stood for back in the day, “Party Hardy.”
So the show comes to an end, and again these guys DO NOT disappoint. Still proving to put on the best stage show, with the most energy and most of all still proving to be the “Maniacs of Rock.”
