NORTH AMERICA 2002 “Hell Comes To Your Town" Tour

I have been looking forward to this show. After reading DJWill’s review of the Wacken 2002 Fest in Germany and buying Kreator’s Violent Revolution album, it was a must for me to attend this show.

I arrived late to meet up with my friend Arianne, but she was in good company lost in a sea of long hair and black leather jackets. We finally made our way inside the venue, which was a small metal club but with a decent stage --Thank God because those bands have massive drum equipment. Now it was up to us to get as close to the stage as possible without getting crushed. So the right side of the stage was the best choice.

When we finally made it through the thick crowd, Destruction had all ready started their set. The sound was good and the guys looked in their best shape possible. Schmier (vocals & bass) with his very tall 6'5 stature was a true German metal legend in action. The crowd was older which was nice to see. The response from the fans was very enthusiastic. I'll be honest here I’m not too familiar with Destruction’s discography, but to the fans reaction it fit the bill. They wanted true metal that’s what they got.

After a short break and a cold beer we get to see Kreator come alive. Sami Yli-Sirniö is the newest addition to Kreator. In the early 2001, he replaced the previous lead guitarist Tommy Vetterli. Sami was quite amazing on stage he is a very talented guitar player and I think he fits the band very well. Also, not so new member Christian Giesler joined Kreator in 1994 after the Renewal tour when Rob Fioretti left the band. All these changes didn’t make any difference to the dynamic of Kreator. Still a rockin’ metal band. The new album Violent Revolution is a hit for sure. This album has everything for every taste, and what I think is nice is Sami’s melodic sound is present all throughout the album, which makes it maybe a little easier to listen over and over again -- well for me anyway.

Something that I think the fans enjoyed during the show was the variety of songs the band played… from the new album, “Violent Revolution” to “Endless Pain” to “Tormentor” (from the Endless Pain album, 1985) and of course “Extreme Aggressions (from the self-titled album, 1989). I don’t think they played “Stronger Than Before” (from the Outcast album, 1997) unless I was stuck in the bathroom and didn’t hear it, so that’s a little bit “Ugh!” for me because it is my favorite Kreator tune. There were three encores -- people just could not get enough. Mille (guitar & vocals) filmed the very aggressive crowd and said it would be on a live DVD which they are planning to release once the tour is over or sometime after that. They dedicated also a song to Voivod, which the guys seemed very flattered by the gesture. I think if I’m not mistaken it was “Tormentor.” /p> Overall, an amazing adventure with these German metal legends. I got to meet the singer from Destruction, Schmier, and the one from Kreator, Mille, who were very awesome guys -- very down to earth and cool. I got to talk a lot more with Schmier from Destruction, and one thing I can say about these guys they are pure metal and the real shit! If you get a chance, check out their schedule for the remaining of the tour... now tell me if that’s not true metal power --no day off --from North America 2002 “Hell Comes To Your Town” Tour 2002-09-12 to “Hell Comes to UK/Ireland” 2002-11-03... I say insanity!

Is metal dead??? I think not!!!
