Went and saw Dio, Scorpions, and Deep Purple at the Reno Hilton on July 30th. Got there early and played some nickel slots & nickel video poker. Came real close on Royal flushs twice (4,000) nickels, got 4 of 5 twice. Wound up losing $21. Oh well, it killed an hour while I was waiting for my friend Bryan to show up. Had a couple beers in the mean time & a shot of JD. My friend showed up and we got in line just as Dio came out. We missed a couple songs while being frisked, but finally got in.

Dio played a pretty good show. A few new songs, "Push," "Killing the Dragon" and a really good one called “Rock N’ Roll” that he wrote after 9/11. He also played "Children of the Sea" from Sabbath. He played his classic "Man on the Silver Mountain" from Rainbow, and finished up with "Heaven & Hell" from his Black Sabbath days. All in all an okay opening act.

Next up SCORPIONS!!!!!!!! One of my favorite bands! This would be about the seventh time I've seen them! They KICKED ASS from the first song to the finish!!!!!! They played most of their best, most rocking hits, including two dusted off jewels... "In Trance" and "We'll Burn The Sky." Many other GREAT songs like "Dynamite," "Blackout," "Coast to Coast," "Bad Boys Running Wild," "Rock You Like A Hurricane," etc. They played excellent -- loud, hard, & with a TON of energy!!!!!!! My neck was a little sore after head banging to their music so I needed some medication... got a shot of Jim Beam & a 24 oz. Bud. Was a little hungry, too, so bought a BBQ beef sandwich.... Still had a little neck pain so got another shot of Jim Beam & another Bud!!! After that, felt pretty good :-)

Next up Deep Purple. They opened with "My Woman From Tokyo" -- a pretty good rocking tune, but really lacking, in my opinion, with the one guitar and keyboards. Hard to follow the dual guitar ATTACK of the SCORPIONS!!!!!!! I like Purple, but they are feeling their age! A bit slow in tempo and looking their age as well. Ian Gillan looks just like "Jan" from the Jan & Dean band now!!! A few more plodding hits from them and then.... a special guest... Joe Satriani! He definitely brought some MUCH needed energy to them! He had some great guitar duels with Steve Morse!!! The dual guitars really filled out the sound and they played MUCH better and with more energy. Joe stayed out for the rest of their set and helped them to rock out with: "Smoke on the Water," "Space Truckin'," and the finale... "Highway Star."

All in all a pretty good show, just wish the Scorps had headlined and played longer!!!! They are a HARD act to follow!!!!!!
